  • FELFEL It’s Persian and means “pepper.” Emanuel Steiner has Swiss and Iranian roots; the name is a tribute to his grandmother. As a child, he discovered his love of cooking in her kitchen. And because pepper and salt go hand in hand, the proprietary IT system behind the smart refrigerators is called Namak, which is Persian for “salt.”

  • During a dreary lunch break. As a consultant in Zurich, Emanuel Steiner had had enough of mediocre food and lonely lunch breaks. His solution: a smart refrigerator that brings good food and coworkers together around the table.
