How hungry are you really?

When a snack becomes an entire meal

Lunch was a few hours ago and you are starting to feel hungry again.

Conscientiously you grab a fruit, but somehow you still feel hungry-ish. Luckily, you have a snack bar in your secret drawer. But somehow it did not really satisfy you either, and your body is already asking for more.

But how is it possible to feel even hungrier after eating? Most of the time the explanation is quite simple…

We are mistaking thirst for hunger!

Nowadays, with food available around the clock, most of us don’t know the sensation of being really hungry anymore – and what feeling thirsty feels like.

And as we are depriving our body of what it really needs – being hydrated – we just do not feel satisfied and for many of us the cravings end in a fully blown ravenous hunger.

Liquid ≠ Hydration

This is when most people tend to start consuming soft drinks, firmly believing to soothe ones crave for sweets and to quench the thirst at the same time. Unfortunately, most soft drinks aggravate the condition.

Especially, caffeinated soft drinks have a dehydrating effect and therefore, absorb even more body fluid. Furthermore, sugar and it’s artificial alternatives (except Stevia and Xylitol) spike or blood sugar level and therefore our body may signalize us fake hunger.

What should one drink then? And how much?

Water and unsweetened tea are best to maintain a healthy fluid balance. Experts recommend drinking between 30ml – 35ml water per kilogram of bodyweight. Example:  A person weighing 70kg needs between 2,1 und 2,5 liter water per day. (70*30 = 2100ml). If you exercise, have a cold or suffer from digestion problems you should increase your intake.

So, really just water?

Ideally water is your main hydration source. Should you require a higher intake – caused by endurance training, hot summer days or a flue –so called “isotonic drinks” come in handy.

These drinks are high in electrolytes, consisting mainly of potassium, magnesia, natrium, calcium, phosphor and chloride. These promote our body to absorb fluids more quickly and provide us with additional minerals.

Besides artificially produced isotonic drinks, coconut water is a healthy alternative – just make sure that it is natural coconut water without any additives.

Where to find high-quality coconut water?

Natural coconut water is being sold in most health food stores and in larger supermarkets –  as well as the FELFEL fridge.

And besides coconut water, water and healthy soft drink alternatives the FELFEL also holds many tasty meals for breakfast, lunch or even an in-betweeny, for when you are really hungry.
